Alexander Hazelbank began playing piano at a young age, but soon opted to teach himself the drums, guitar and banjo instead. His love of music, especially Beethoven’s piano works, eventually led him back to classical repertoire and he learned music notation from a classically trained neighbour. After years of self-teaching he began piano study with Associate Professor Ronald Farren-Price AM at the University of Melbourne.
In 2017 he received the Allen Scholarship Award for piano performance, and in 2019 produced the debut recording of contemporary piano études by the Sydney composer, Kate Reid. Alex was a finalist in the 2021 Great Romantics Piano Competition, and is currently the Organ Scholar at All Saints Anglican Church, East St Kilda, studying J.S. Bach with John O’Donnell. He completed a Master’s degree in 2022.
